Sarah Rigby of Cheung Sha didn't want a mere brain tumor to slow her down - she just didn't have time! Oh, and she's written a book about how she dealt with it all. Useful lessons in life even for people who don't have any mould anywhere...

Danielle Denquar Chupak is a talented girl, wise beyond her years. Not satisfied with the kind and safe music industry in Hong Kong, she moved to London where she has to compete with hundreds of other singers and composers for attention. But she is nothing if not determined and can teach everyone a thing or two when it comes to doing what you love and trying to make your dreams come true.

This week's guest on Resident Voices is a real life super hero. Michael James Egerton is the former private investigator who arrested over 568 criminals in the UK, made massive contributions to aviation safety in Asia, and in 2012 spearheaded an investigation that ended corruption at a major Hong Kong based airline. He has a third-degree black sash in wing chun, has completed numerous marathons, ran over 100km, has a law degree and a Master's Degree in Chinese Studies, and has senior roles in three companies including Radio Lantau.  

The director of three businesses, very unique and highly beneficial to Hong Kong, Michael Egerton is also a consumer rights activist committed to protecting consumers from harm caused by irresponsible manufacturers and retailers.

Ham Tin resident Zein Williams works for local charity Child Welfare Scheme, helping people in Nepal. Long-time Mui Wo resident Edward Bunker has a form of cerebral palsy called hemiplegia, but that seems only to have spurred him on. Owner of a certificate in advanced scuba diving, he has also climbed Kilimanjaro.  He will accept help from well-meaning people, but preferably when he actually needs it.  Most of all he wants to help others, and finding his perfect niche as a Reiki healer, now he does.

Meet Sean Earl, Canadian teacher extraordinaire from Pui O School! After implementing a reading programme at the school, the students have soared past even secondary international schools in reading skills; amount of books read and time spent reading. W Where most students in Hong Kong read five pages or less a day, often ending up hating it because the books chosen are so boring, the kids at Pui O School read up to 40 books a year, loving it because they get to choose the books themselves. Greeting each individual student by name at the school gate every morning, Earl is a familiar sight in Pui O, as familiar as the water buffalo he and the students love so much.

Meet Jane Houng, communicator extraordinaire. From reading from a teleprompter on ATV to marrying a rebel who spells his surname "Houng" instead of "Hung" to writing children's books on Lantau Island, Jane Houng has led an interesting life. Resident Voices talks to her live from Lo Uk Tsuen Country Club, complete with two other women also named Jane, albeit with two 'n's! So it's all about spelling, literacy and words in the Country Club today.

In 1981, Jane wrote 'Bathroom Parley' which was short-listed by Faber and Faber for a compilation of novellas by young writers. In 2006, she published two educational text books for Pearson Education Asia: 'Primary Longman Express Mock Papers for the Territory-wide System Assessment for Primary 3 and Primary 6'. In 2011, she published the children's story 'Lantau Life' and 'Houng's', a non-fiction work about the early life of her husband in China. Both are available for sale on Amazon. Her YA Chinese vampire novel 'Bloodswell' was published by QX Publishing, an imprint of Commercial Press Hong Kong, in 2012. Jane has also published two children's chapter books, children's dramas, a radio play, poems and short stories. In July 2014, Jane graduated with an MFA (Writing for Children and Young Adults) from Vermont College of Fine Arts, US. She writes reviews for the Asian Review of Books. She is also a member of the US organisation SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators), WIPS (Women in Publishing Society) and two critique groups.

"Throwing rubbish is not a cool thing to do!" Frankie McYuen has provided the people of Cheung Sha with neighbourhood-bought groceries for a while now. The shop, Lantau Grocer, has its own Facebook page (of course!) and McYuen isn't averse to delivering food to nearby villages at short notice. When the environment is in trouble, as it was (and still is) from late June this year, McYuen isn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and start cleaning up the tons of mainland and Hong Kong-generated plastic suffocating his beloved Cheung Sha Beach.
