  • Resident Voices 1 - Sarah Rigby

"You have cancer. Three words no one wants to hear but too many do." This is the first line on the back cover of Cheung Sha resident Sarah Rigby's book Managing Mould - Living With Cancer. And not any old cancer, but a particularly aggressive brain cancer. Hear her amazing story in Resident Voices!

Tune in to radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

    Sarah Rigby
    Sarah Rigby

Sarah Rigby of Cheung Sha didn't want a mere brain tumor to slow her down - she just didn't have time! Seeing her aggressive cancer merely as 'mould' that wasn't to be allowed back in, she survived against all odds and is now working as a teacher and writer of educational materials. Oh, and she's written a book about how she dealt with it all. Useful lessons in life even for people who don't have any mould anywhere...

  • Resident Voices 10 - Danielle Denquar Chupak

Danielle Denquar Chupak is a talented girl, wise beyond her years. Not satisfied with the kind and safe music industry in Hong Kong, she moved to London where she has to compete with hundreds of other singers and composers for attention. But she is nothing if not determined and can teach everyone a thing or two when it comes to doing what you love and trying to make your dreams come true.

    Danielle Denquar Chupak

Hear her story live from "Turkish" (Or Bahce) in Mui Wo - including one of her songs on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

  • Resident Voices 12 - Jacqui Green

    Sit!

If we were professional journalists we would probably write a cheesy title with a dog pun, and then write an article swimming in trivia and irrelevant information. But we are not professional journalists, and we are holding back our total lack of professionalism to bring you a very useful and informative interview with the number one lady who knows more about adopting cats and dogs on Lantau than anyone else -

    Jacqui Green of PALS

And we absolutely guarantee NO CHEESY DOG PUNS.

If you live on Lantau, then you probably love dogs, cats or someone that wants to adopt one. Well, Jacqui's gonna tell you how to be a responsible animal adopter.  And that means being able to commit to the animal for 10-15 years.

You heard me right buster, don't get a dog unless you are going to give it a home for life. And if you are going to get an animal the number one place you should go is PALS.

And you can hear the number one interview with her on Friday and (repeated) Sunday at 1pm on Resident Voices on www.RADIOLANTAU.COM - Hong Kong's NUMBER ONE RADIO STATION.

Hear about Jacqui Green on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later. ARF ARF!!

  • Resident Voices 13 - Michael James Egerton

This week's guest on Resident Voices is a real life super hero. Michael James Egerton is the former private investigator who arrested over 568 criminals in the UK, made massive contributions to aviation safety in Asia, and in 2012 spearheaded an investigation that ended corruption at a major Hong Kong based airline. He has a third-degree black sash in wing chun, has completed numerous marathons, ran over 100km, has a law degree and a Master's Degree in Chinese Studies, and has senior roles in three companies including Radio Lantau.

The director of three businesses, very unique and highly beneficial to Hong Kong, Michael Egerton is also a consumer rights activist committed to protecting consumers from harm caused by irresponsible manufacturers and retailers.

But ever modest, he doesn't talk about any of that in this episode of Resident Voices - he talks about Sharawaji Records, a UK based-record label that has run remotely from Lantau since 2011. Hear about the growing popularity of surf music, and a bit about punk, powerpop, spaghetti western and new releases on Sharawaji Records from The Zillatones, The Stryd, The Tsunamibots, and The Syndicate of Surf.

    Sharawaji Records

Don't miss this chance to hear from one of Hong Kong's most dynamic business owners and get an insight into why the taste-making policy of a niche record label has quickly led to Radio Lantau being established as Hong Kong's number one radio station.

Hear Michael Egerton on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

  • Resident Voices 14 - Melanie Potgeiter

Tune in to www.radiolantau.com at 1pm on Friday 23rd September to hear Melanie Potgieter on Resident Voices, talking about everyone's favourite buffalo Billy. Now I have it on very good authority that Billy is a massive fan of legendary surfpunk band The Tsunamibots and similarly enjoys crushing humans, so we are going to play their new track for Billy after the interview. We've also got some rare 60s soul and blues, and tracks from Nick Piunti Music, Merry Widows and The Terrorsurfs.

  • Resident Voices 2 - Martin Lerigo

Cecilie Gamst Berg brings you a shocking interview with Martin Lerigo about the dumping of waste on the Pui O Wetlands.

  • Resident Voices 3 - Zein Williams

Ham Tin resident Zein Williams works for local charity Child Welfare Scheme, helping people in Nepal. Resident Voices manages to hold her down for 20 minutes - live from Garden Cafe! - to hear all about the devastating earthquake(s) in Nepal last year; what is being done and what needs to be done, before she runs off to scale a couple of peaks in the rain. If you want to get involved helping the people of Nepal, go to http://www.cwshk.org

  • Resident Voices 4 - Edward Bunker

Long-time Mui Wo resident Edward Bunker has a form of cerebral palsy called hemiplegia, but that seems only to have spurred him on. Owner of a certificate in advanced scuba diving, he has also climbed Kilimanjaro.  He will accept help from well-meaning people, but preferably when he actually needs it.  Most of all he wants to help others, and finding his perfect niche as a Reiki healer, now he does.

Hear his intriguing story on Resident Voices on radiolantau.com on Frida at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

  • Resident Voices 5 - Sean Earl

Meet Sean Earl, Canadian teacher extraordinaire from Pui O School! After implementing a reading programme at the school, the students have soared past even secondary international schools in reading skills; amount of books read and time spent reading. W Where most students in Hong Kong read five pages or less a day, often ending up hating it because the books chosen are so boring, the kids at Pui O School read up to 40 books a year, loving it because they get to choose the books themselves. Greeting each individual student by name at the school gate every morning, Earl is a familiar sight in Pui O, as familiar as the water buffalo he and the students love so much.

Hear his story on Resident Voices on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

  • Resident Voices 6 - Jane Houng

Meet Jane Houng, communicator extraordinaire. From reading from a teleprompter on ATV to marrying a rebel who spells his surname "Houng" instead of "Hung" to writing children's books on Lantau Island, Jane Houng has led an interesting life. Resident Voices talks to her live from Lo Uk Tsuen Country Club, complete with two other women also named Jane, albeit with two 'n's! So it's all about spelling, literacy and words in the Country Club today.

In 1981, Jane wrote 'Bathroom Parley' which was short-listed by Faber and Faber for a compilation of novellas by young writers. In 2006, she published two educational text books for Pearson Education Asia: 'Primary Longman Express Mock Papers for the Territory-wide System Assessment for Primary 3 and Primary 6'. In 2011, she published the children's story 'Lantau Life' and 'Houng's', a non-fiction work about the early life of her husband in China. Both are available for sale on Amazon. Her YA Chinese vampire novel 'Bloodswell' was published by QX Publishing, an imprint of Commercial Press Hong Kong, in 2012. Jane has also published two children's chapter books, children's dramas, a radio play, poems and short stories. In July 2014, Jane graduated with an MFA (Writing for Children and Young Adults) from Vermont College of Fine Arts, US. She writes reviews for the Asian Review of Books. She is also a member of the US organisation SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators), WIPS (Women in Publishing Society) and two critique groups.

Hear her story on Resident Voices on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

  • Resident Voices 7 - Chris Riley (The Water Buffalo)

Tune in to Radio Lantau today to hear all about popular restaurant The Water Buffalo and its famous beer! New batch coming soon, listen to the interview on Resident Voices and get the good news straight from the Buffalo's mouth...

  • Resident Voices 8 - Sally Bunker

Tune in to Radio Lantau at 1pm on Friday to hear all about Sally Bunker, according to herself over 60 because that's the age she started her new career as a botanical artist, but no one looking at her physique would put her much above 40.

Former gymnast, athlete, yoga teacher and educator, she now shares the incredible flora of Lantau with the world in her beautiful paintings of flowers and trees, as well as hands (or feet)-on Tree Walks.

    Sally Bunker

Hear Sally bunker on Resident Voices on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.

  • Resident Voices 9 - Frankie McYuen

"Throwing rubbish is not a cool thing to do!" Frankie McYuen has provided the people of Cheung Sha with neighbourhood-bought groceries for a while now. The shop, Lantau Grocer, has its own Facebook page (of course!) and McYuen isn't averse to delivering food to nearby villages at short notice. When the environment is in trouble, as it was (and still is) from late June this year, McYuen isn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and start cleaning up the tons of mainland and Hong Kong-generated plastic suffocating his beloved Cheung Sha Beach. Hear his views on the EPD, the rubbish problem and what should be done, on Resident Voices.

Hear Frankie McYuen on Resident Voices on radiolantau.com on Friday at 1pm, (repeated on Sunday sometime after 1pm) and in the archive a few days later.
