Hey! You know what time it is? It’s time for your first Cover Song of the Week clue.

This clue is for fellow musicians and students of the roots of Rock N’ Roll.

The Cover Song of the Week original came out of a 1972 jam session, but was relentlessly rehearsed until it as perfected. It’s a staccato beat, Funk-influenced track that became a staple of the original artist’s live set until their 1980 breakup. Live and on the recording, the guitar player used a wah-wah, while the band’s bassist plays keyboard and clavinet, the latter he says was inspired by this song:

The lyrics of the song were inspired by this 1936 Robert Johnson song which uses similar automotive metaphors for sex:

Co-written by Nikki Sixx, that was “Falling In and Out of Love” from Lita ford’s self-produced 1988 album Lita. Before it, from the same album, was “Kiss Me Deadly.”

As I record this show, it is now Lita Ford’s birthday. Judging by how hot she looks, I’m guessing she’s turning 40 today. That’s old enough to have played in the Runaways in 1976, right? I’ve always been bad at math when counting higher than menage a trios.

You know what is definitely 40 this week? The iconic album Blizzard of Ozz. More about that, including a Randy Rhoads outtake, after this brief message from the people who pay me so I don’t have to count my drinks.

Welcome back to the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. I’m Pariah Burke.

On September 20th, 1980, exactly 40 years ago, former Black Sabbath vocalist John Michael Osbourne released his debut solo album. It was called Blizzard of Ozz. In addition to John Michael–whom the world knows better as Ozzy–Osbourne, the album was a coming out party for one of–some people argue THE–best Metal guitarist to ever live: Randy Rhoads.

Today, September 18th as I record this show, Epic Records and Ozzy Osbourne release the 40th Anniversary, Expanded Edition of Blizzard of Ozz. In addition to genre defining classics like “Mr Crowley,” “Suicide Solution,” and, of course, “Crazy Train,” the Expanded Blizzard contains live cuts from the 1981 Blizzard of Ozz tour as well as other special features.

I’m about to play for you a couple of those “other” special features.

It’s the master, the guitar god Randy Rhoads himself with a 1-minute, 14 second solo that never made any of the tracks on the original album.

When we’re talking about the Cover Song of the Week, I guess we’re talking ’bout love. Especially if you take note of the prostitutes and cocaine riding on lead balloons.

What Hard Rock classic grew out of a 1972 jam session, was released in 1975, and featured lyrics inspired by a 1936 Robert Johnson song as well as a Funky riff and staccato clavinet beat heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”? That song would be Led Zeppelin’s “Trampled Under Foot,” an innuendo-laden song about sexual temptation.

Covering “Trampled Under Foot” in a brand new release this week, from their upcoming covers album, is Whores and Coke… No, wait, I mean Hookers & Blow. That’s the band’s name. Hookers & Blow. You’ve heard me play Hookers & Blow music plenty of times on Hard, Heavy & Hair, so hopefully you recognized who they were when I gave you the hint that it was a super group featuring members from Guns N’ Roses, Quiet Riot, Type O Negative, and Danzig. Founders Dizzy Reed and Alex Grossi are, of course, from Guns N’ Roses and Quiet Riot, respectively. Drummer Johnny Kelly comes from Danzi and Type 0 Negative.

They just released their newest cover, and it’s the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week.

Here it is, Hookers & Blow with “Trampled Under Foot,” followed immediately by the Led Zeppelin original for comparison.
