I don’t usually play live music on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show–that’s more for the daily 1-song vignette Front Row Ticket I do for select radio stations–but, in addition to “Kick Out the Jams” being a great way to start a show, the MC5, being from Detroit, have something to do with the Cover Song of the Week. I’ll tell you more about that in the first clue very shortly.

Each week on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show we play a game, a mystery, called the Cover Song of the Week. I give you clues to the song, the artist, and the original recording artist, and you try to figure out the Hard Rock, Metal, or Glam cover version of someone else’s song before I play that cover back-to-back with the original for you in the second hour of the show.

Ready for your first clue? The first one is always the hardest.

This week’s Cover Song of the Week is brand new and all about Detroit. No, the lyrics aren’t directly about Detroit like “Detroit Rock City,” but the song is by–and I don’t use this word lightly–an icon of Hard Rock born in Detroit who helped form the Golden Era Detroit Hard Rock scene. He’s joined on the new Cover Song of the Week by members of other Detroit Hard Rock alumni including guitarist Steve Hunter from the band CALLED Detroit, who, back in 1971, ALSO covered the Cover Song of the Week. It was this version the aforementioned icon first heard, and he wanted that same heavy Steve Hunter riff in his new 2020 cover. Also joining in on the track are Joe Bonamassa, Tommy Henriksen, and, from the band Detroit Wheels, Johnny “Bee” Badanjek.

Can you believe it’s been 40 years since Motorhead put out their seminal Ace of Spades album? This month. November 8th, 1980. Forty years ago. The Ace of Spades is ranked on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, which, once upon a time probably meant something. Nowadays, not too many people trust Rolling Stone or the Rock Hall of Fame it created. But that’s not the point. They still get SOME things right; one of them how awesome and important is Motörhead’s Ace of Spades.

A brand new 40th Anniversary Edition of the Ace of Spades album has just been released, and this remastered version of the title track, sounding cleaner and rawer than ever at the same time, is the first–and likely only–single from it. Crank it up!

A double-shot of new tracks there. The second one was “Behind the Moon,” a deep cut not previously played on the radio anywhere from the debut LP The Ride from Pennsylvania 3-piece Small Town Titans. A couple of weeks ago I played their latest single, “Rufflin’ Feathers” on the Rock the Vote Hard, Heavy & Hair show number 275. Since then, they’ve dropped their new album and are planning a live streaming launch party on Facebook. I gotta tell ya, I’m loving the whole album. I first discovered Small Town Titans with their Hard Rock cover of the “The Grinch Stole Christmas,” which I’ll probably play again on this year’s Hard, Heavy & Hairy Christmas Special. Since then, I’ve been digging every track the band puts out, including all the non-single album cuts like “Behind the Moon”. The Ride is a killer album. Check it out.

As promised, here’s your second clue:

The Cover Song of the Week original is a Rock N Roll song with a very on-the-nose title, a three-word phrase that can also be found in the title of more than 25 other Rock songs. This one, however, was written by Lou Reed for his band the Velvet Underground and appeared on the last album Lou Reed participated in before quitting the Velvet Underground to go make some money in the music business.

Think about the song title and all the words I just said. It should come to you.

Didn’t that sound like it could have been a Rare Hair I dug up from a long lost 1987 cassingle? It’s not. It’s a brand new 2020 track from the one-man-band calling himself Magic Dance. The “one man” behind the band is singer/songwriter Jon Siejka who is signed, as Magic Dance, to Frontiers Records. The second Frontiers album, Remnants, will be released December 4th, 2020. It’s already on MY Christmas list.

With two versions of L.A. Guns running around, a lot of people are choosing sides. What would you say if I told you you didn’t have to choose between them? All music is meant to be enjoyed. Except Kanye West. That’s just meant to piss people off.

That new song you just heard is from Kurt Frohlich, Kelly Nickels, Scotty Griffin, and Steve Riley. It’s not the version with Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis, although Phil Lewis WAS in the band. Still, Riley and Nickels DID play on the first three LA. Guns albums during the bands period of greatest success. That would be the self-titled L.A. Guns, Cocked & Loaded, and Hollywood Vampires. So why get hung up on which one is the so-called “real” L.A. Guns? Let the musicians and lawyers sort that one out while you and I can enjoy twice the L.A. Guns-style music.

Check out the album Renegades, which includes “All That You Are” and nine other rocking tracks. It’s the first album from the Guns lineup I just noted.

And now, as we’re almost to the Cover Song of the Week, it’s time for your final clue.

The Cover Song of the Week artist has been vocally critical about musicians who take public stances on politics or even openly support political candidates. In 2018 he called the practice, quote, “an abuse of power.” End quote. Despite that, this Rock icon’s main association to politics is satirical. Every U.S. Presidential election since 1972’s, he pretends to run for President in support of his famous song, “Elected.” Who is that artist? It’s the same artist doing the brand new Cover Song of the Week, which is coming up next!

Okay. I played this one a little tricky. The Cover Song of the Week isn’t about Detroit, nor was the original version recorded there. I mean, everyone knows the Velvet Underground were a New York band formed by native New Yorker Lou Reed.

The song… Did you figure out the song? It’s a Rock and Roll song with a three-word on-the-nose title using a phrase found in the titles to more than 25 other songs. Right: The Cover Song of the Week title is “Rock and Roll”. I don’t how I could have been more obvious about that one.

The Velvet Underground wrote “Rock and Roll” largely about Lou Reed’s life in New York City. So where does the Detroit connection come in? What warranted me dropping all those Detroit-related clues like tracks from MC5, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, and even “Detroit Rock City” from Kiss?

The artist doing the Cover Song of the Week in a new single made the song as Detroit-centric as possible. First, he was born in Detroit and cut his teeth helping to build the Hard Rock scene in the city in the late 60s and early 70s. Once day in 1971, this Rock icon heard a band called Detroit–that was the band’s name–IN Detroit–recording a heavy new arrangement of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll.”

Fast forward to 2020 and this iconic rocker who was such a big part of the Detroit Hard Rock scene, decides to record an entire album with musical memories of the sound and spirit of the Golden Era of Detroit Hard Rock. “Rock & Roll” is the first single from that upcoming album, titled Detroit Stories, and the artist enlisted the help of the guy who wrote the heavy riff for the ’71 Detroit band cover of “Rock & Roll,” former Detroit band guitarist Steve Hunter, as well as Johnny “Bee” Badanjek from the band Detroit Wheels, Paul Randolph (legendary Detroit jazz and R&B bassist) and special guests Joe Bonamassa and Tommy Henriksen (for this occasion, crowned “Honorary Detroiters”).

The Detroit Stories album is coming out as a CD, 2 LP Gatefold, CD plus DVD, and a CD Box Set including a Blu-Ray, t-shirt, face mask, torch light, and stickers on February 26th, 2021.
