Featuring the best new and old hard rock, metal, and hair bands, it’s Hard, Heavy & Hair, the Summertime Special. Let’s start with Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi – Summertime
—————————————-

Bon Jovi with “Summertime” from the Lost Highway album kicking us off. Welcome to Hard, Heavy & Hair, I’m your hard rocking, heavy drinking, long-haired hedonist of a host, Pariah Burke.

Ahhh! It’s summer time here in the Northern Hemisphere of planet Earth. It’s time for bikinis and popsicles, pool parties and cookouts, for lying out tanning and cruising with the top down. Whatever YOU’re doing to enjoy the summer, I’ve got the sound track for you. This is the annual Hard, Heavy & Hair Summertime Special, which is full summer-vibe hard rock, heavy metal, and hair bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 20-teens. There’s scorching beach-ready guitar licks, groovy tracks for evening iced tea-sipping chilling out, and plenty of hard, heavy, and hairy music you’ll want to crank as you cruise the beach or boulevard.

You’re going to want to crank this episode of Hard, Heavy & Hair, and to listen to it again and again throughout your summer. You can do that from PariahRocks.com, that’s P-A-R-I-A-H-R-O-C-K-S-dot com, RockMixFM, and the MixCloud mobile app. You can stream this or any past Hard, Heavy & Hair show on-demand through your phone or any Internet connected device at the beach, in your backyard, in the pool, and in your buddy’s car.

Hard, Heavy & Hair is YOUR weekly 2-hour dose of the biggest hits, deepest cut album tracks, and newest hard rock, metal, and hair releases. And this week’s show is all about Summer Time, with heaping helpings of music from Sammy Hagar, Downplay, Slaughter, the Scorpions, Van Halen, Hollywood Undead, Kid Rock, Diamante, and plenty more from yesterday and today.

There’s even a summer-related Cover Song of the Week, something I’ll begin dropping clues and hints about after this first block of four hot and sunny hits that capture the feel of summer from Van Halen, Poison, Diamante, and, this next song, a song no Hard, Heavy & Hair Summertime Special would be complete without.

Congratulations to all you recent graduates and all of you just getting your summer break. No more pencils; no more books; no more teacher’s dirty looks. Like Alice Cooper said, “Schools Out for Summer!”

—————————————-
Alice Cooper – School’s Out
Diamante – Coming In Hot
—————————————-

If you get a chance, check out the music video for Diamante’s “Coming in Hot.” I’ve embedded it in the show notes on PariahRocks.com. It’s azure-haired Diamante singing the song in part at a pool party at a retirement home. When the video came out, I asked her if she was uncomfortable singing lyrics like “so fire it up / let’s get you down on me” in front of a bunch of people old enough to be her great-grandparents. The then 20-year-old singer had swagger, let me tell you. She said nothing phases her in those situations.

Poison’s anthem for a great summer, “Nothin’ but a Good Time,” following Hagar-era Van Halen and “Summer Nights” from 5150.

Poison – Nothin’ but a Good Time

Every Hard, Heavy & Hair show features a hard, heavy, or hairy rendition of someone else’s song followed immediately by the originally released version of the song. That’s the Cover Song of the Week segment. I usually don’t TELL you what the Cover Song of the Week is until we get to it. Instead, I drop hints and clues and leave it to you to guess the song, the original artist, and/or the covering artist. But you have to do it without Google!

Here’s your first of several clues.

The band covering the summer-related song in this week’s Cover Song of the Week is a Swedish band named for a mortal in Greek mythology. The young mortal man, the myth goes, was unhappy in his love affair with a nymph named Smilax. In the tradition of the Greek Gods being giant dicks, they transformed the young man into a plant, one that produces purple flowers with which most of us are familiar.

That’s your first Cover Song of the Week hint. They get easier as we go along, and I’ll be dropping another one very shortly.

Right now, “The Summer Looks Good On You” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

—————————————-
Cheap Trick – The Summer Looks Good On You
—————————————-

80s summer metal and hard rock from Guns N Roses, Aldo Nova, and David Lee Roth wishing they could all be California girls.

—————————————-
David Lee Roth – California Girls
Aldo Nova – Long Hot Summer
Guns N’ Roses – Paradise City
—————————————-

Take me down to Paradise City with the weed is cheap and the girls are easy. Wait. Those aren’t the right lyrics, are they? Oh, well. That’s how I’ve always sung it in my head.

Before G N R was Aldo Nova, the Canadian one-man-band with “Long Hot Summer” from his third album, ’85s Twitch. That album was the last Nova would record with Portrait Records. Nova didn’t like the album and felt his record company had compromised his creativity by insisting on a more commercial sound. He refused to record for them again after it. When Portrait Records wouldn’t release him from his recording contract, Nova moved to Montreal to write jingles until his contract expired in ’91. It was then recorded his fourth and final album, Blood on the Bricks, which, unlike Twitch, actually charted in the US at number 14 on the US charts.

After that, Aldo Nova focused on writing songs for others including award-winning songs for Celine Dion, Clay Akin, and others. Aldo Nova also wrote the main guitar riff Jon Bon Jovi used in ’91’s “Blaze of Glory” for the Young Guns 2 soundtrack.

Let’s mellow out with Hollywood Undead’s “Ghost Beach.” The Led Zeppelin, Slaughter, and Type O Negative, are coming up in just a few minutes.

I’m Pariah Burke.

—————————————-
Hollywood Undead – Ghost Beach
Led Zeppelin – Dancing Days
Enuff Z’nuff – Hot Little Summer Girl
Scorpions – Big City Nights
—————————————-

In order, you just heard Hollywood Undead doing “Ghost Beach,” the unmistakable “Dancing Days” from Led Zeppelin, Enuff Z’nuff and “Hot Little Summer Girl” from their self-titled 1989 debut album, and finally, “Big City Nights” from the Scorpions.

It’s time for another Cover Song of the Week clue. This time, the clue is about the original recording artist. The next clue will be about the song itself.

The song that is the Cover Song of the Week was written in 1958 by a then 19-year-old singer who was a teen heartthrob. Sadly, the singer died two years after the song in question became a hit, at age 21. Singing about being held back by, and rebelling against, parents and society, and then dying at only 21, made the singer a rock n’ roll legend and drew even more comparisons with James Dean, who also died young in a car accident.

Ruminate on that clue about the Cover Song of the Week while we check out more music.

I used to live in Daytona Beach back when it was still the World’s Most Famous Beach, when bikers, rockers, and, well, anyone who wasn’t geriatric was still welcome. It was in Daytona Beach that I first started playing to packed houses, spinning records at events and Jell-O wrestling… Oh. I said Jell-O on the air. The folks at Jell-O don’t like that. They want people to say just “gelatin” when talking about events like naked and semi-naked biker babe wrestling. It gives wholesome Jell-O brand gelatin a bad vibe, or something. Well, to the folks at Jell-O I say “tough shit motherfuckers. If you were so worried about your reputation you shouldn’t have hired a spokesman who was a serial rapist and liked to drug and diddle the Jell-O jigglers.

[clip Bill Cosby]

So I lived in Daytona Beach when Bonfire released the song “Daytona Nights,” back when it was still a hog heaven for bikers. That song isplaying right after we get up all night and sleep all day with Slaughter.

—————————————-
Slaughter – Up All Night
Bonfire – Daytona Nights
Type O Negative – Summer Breeze
Within Temptation – Summertime Sadness
—————————————-

Definitely an eclectic block of summer night songs there. The last was “Summertime Sadness” from huge Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation. Before it was Type O Negative doing a truly creepy cover of Seals and Crofts “Summer Breeze”.

I actually had someone ask me about that song recently. The guy–something starting with a T–asked why the song talks about oral sex with with Disney princess Jasmine from Aladdin. If you don’t know, jasmine, is a flower that blooms in the summer. The line is “summer breeze, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.” I get misunderstanding lyrics–like CCR singing about the bathroom on the right–or Jimi Hendrix asking us to pardon him while a smooches a dude–but THAT lyric misunderstanding I just don’t get.

Here’s another hot summer song cover. Bananarama originally did “Cruel Summer” in 1983. Ohio alt metal band Downplay re-did it in 2011. A Hollywood Undead song released just last year, and Kid Rock with one of the best summer songs of all time.

—————————————-
Downplay – Cruel Summer
Hollywood Undead – We Own the Night
Kid Rock – All Summer Long
—————————————-

Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” isn’t QUITE as hard, heavy, or hairy a song as you usually hear on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show, but it fits on this Summertime Special perfectly. It was a number one hit in 8 countries and heavily samples Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”, two very popular songs during Kid Rock’s childhood in the 70s.

Before it was “We Own the Night” from the 2017 Hollywood Undead album Five.

Still coming up is Sammy Hagar, Loverboy, Black N Blue, Y & T, and more.

How about another Cover Song of the Week clue?

This one is about the song itself. The song is about societal and parental oppression of the youth, something that resonates with just about any generation. Here’s some of the lyrics of the song: “workin’ all summer just to try an’ earn a dollar / Everytime I call my baby, to try to get a date / My boss says, no dice, son, you gotta work late”. Know it now? See if you’re right in a just a few minutes when we get to the Cover Song of the Week.

Right now, it’s time to line up the shots at the beach bar and appreciate the girls walking by. I’m Pariah Burke. You’re listening to Hard, Heavy & Hair. It’s time for tequila.

—————————————-
Sammy Hagar – Mas Tequila
Y & T – Summertime Girls
Black ‘n Blue – Nature Of The Beach
—————————————-

We’re just about to the Cover Song of the Week. Let me just back-intro those last three songs.

In order, you heard Sammy Hagar’s heavy-groove drinking tune, “Mas Tequila.” You may recall that earlier in the show you heard from Sammy again with Van Halen. That makes Sammy one of two singers doing double-duty on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Summertime Special. The other singer you’ve already heard from once, but you’ll hear from again soon.

After the Red Rocker was Y & T, which stands for Yesterday & Today, which was the band’s name before shortening it to just “Y & T” and the song “Summertime Girls.” Then Black N Blue brought us the “Nature Of The Beach.”

[COW]

Have you figured out the Cover Song of the Week, the original artist who recorded it, or the artist giving the song a hard and heavy treatment this week?

You know the song is about summer in some way. I also told you it was recorded by a rising star 19-year-old in 1958, a teen heartthrob who tragically died at age 21, earning him comparison to James Dean who was 24 when HE died in a car accident. That original singer was Eddie Cochran. His biggest hit, the Cover Song of the Week, is the 50s teen angst anthem “Summertime Blues.”

The covering artist, a band that takes its name from the Greek figure who found himself unhappy in his love affair with a nymph, so the Gods, being douche bags, screwed him over by turning him into a flowering plant. That plant with the lavender flowers is the Crocus, and the band, using the old Greek-inspired spelling of K-R-O-K-U-S is covering Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week right… now!

—————————————-
Krokus – Summertime Blues
Eddie Cochran – Summertime Blues
—————————————-

Eddie Cochran there with the original 1958 version of “Summertime Blues” following the Cover Song of the Week, Krokus’s 2017 harder rocking version. That song has also been covered by the likes of Rush, the Black Keys, Alan Jackson, the Flaming Lips, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Joan Jett’s version is a solid punk rocker if you want to track that down.

Here’s Diamante again. This time from her debut EP when she was really was only 17 and still a blonde instead of blue-haired metal siren. This song always reminds me of those beach bonfires in high school, especially what tends to happen between horny teenagers at a bonfire.
