The singer of the covering band was so shy when he auditioned for the band that he performed with his back to the rest of the band back in 2006. That same singer is a big country guy. It was he who wanted to cover the Blues Rock original, even though it didn’t fit his band at all.

According to the bassist and founder, quote, “That song has a Southern vibe and we don’t, and we ended up recording it because [the singer] really wanted to. It came out amazing, and I love the song, and we made it our own, which is important when you cover a song.” End quote.

Who was that band fronted by the shy singer?

Here’s a bonus clue: The original recording artist became one of the few blues artists to land on the Hot 100 chart with his 1997 original.

Speaking of calendars, 35 years ago this week Van Halen released their final Top 10 hit of the David Lee Roth era. It was the third single from the album 1984. That song was “Panama,” of course. So reach down between your legs, ease the seat back, and remember what you were doing the first time you heard this song.

35 years old, and “Panama” still packs a punch. A little trivia for you the car revving during the bridge was Eddie Van Halen’s 1972 Lamborghini Miura S. Car buffs know the Miura was the first production supercar with a rear mid-engined two-seat layout.

“Panama” was released way back in 1984, a time when singles were released on 45 RPM vinyl and cassettes. Singles came out on side A of the 45 or cas-single, which left room for a second song on the back. These other songs were called B-Sides. In the case of “Panama,” the B-side in the US was “Drop Dead Legs.” On the UK release, “Girl Gone Bad” was the B-Side. Both are the same tracks as featured on the album 1984. In honor of the 35th anniversary of that single–and its B-sides–here’s the UK B-Side “Girl Gone Bad” from Van Halen.

Do you remember My Darkest Days? Back in 2010 they had a big breakout hit you might just have heard of–especially if you’ve listened to Hard, Heavy & Hair for any length of time. The single features guest Zakk Wylde, former Ozzy guitarist and the frontman for Black Label Society, playing lead guitar on the song. This is it, “Pornstar Dancing.”

My Darkest Days there with their 2010 Number 1 hit “Pornstar Dancing.” My Darkest Days would go on to release as second album in 2012, Sick and Twisted Affair, and then, in 2013, the band went on indefinite hiatus.

In January of 2013 the lead singer for Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier, abruptly left the band without much explanation right before the kickoff a major tour. In the same announcement, Gontier himself noted that the brother of Three Days Grace bassist Brad Walst would replace him. That singer was Matt Walst, the frontman for My Darkest Days.

Matt fronted Three Days Grace on that 2013 Transit of Venus Tour, and has since remained the lead singer through two more albums and accompanying tours. Here’s Matt singing on “Human Race” from the first album he recorded as the vocalist Three Days Grace, 2015’s Human.

I’m Pariah Burke, and we’re talking about the Canadian band My Darkest Days who had a number 1 hit back in 2010 with “Porn Star Dancing,” which you heard just a few minutes ago.

When Matt Walst left My Darkest Days to join Three Days Grace, the rest of the band was supportive of him. Still, that left My Darkest Days on hiatus–more than 6 years now. Sal Costa, the mohawk-sporting lead guitarist, had already left the band in October of 2012, though it wasn’t officially announced until the day before Matt’s departure for Three Days Grace. That left Reid Henry, Brendan McMillan, and Doug Oliver as the members of a band without a lead singer or lead guitarist.

They didn’t sit idle.

Reid and Brendan formed a studio project called fittingly enough Never Say Die. The project evolved and began to take on life as drummer Mike Langford then vocalist Dane Hartsell signed on, completing an EP that turned into an LP called, appropriately, Destroy + Rebuild. But, just after releasing it, the band had to change its name to Deadset Society due to trademark conflict with the Never Say Die Records label.

This next song, which I debuted as a brand new release way back on Hard, Heavy & Hair Show number 153, is from that album.

Deadset Society there formed by two of the members of My Darkest Days after My Darkest Days original singer Matt Walst left to front Three Days Grace.

Deadset Society’s first album–but not their only album! I’ll tell you more about that in a minute. Deadset Society’s Destroy + Rebuild album is a great album. I’ve played several tracks from it Hard, Heavy & Hair going as far back as mid-2017 with “Outside Looking In.”

Like My Darkest Days, Deadset Society is currently officially on hold. Unlike My Darkest Days, the members of Deadset Society are still recording together.

I reached out to drummer Mike Langford and we chatted briefly through email. According to Mike, life changes popped up to temporarily keep Deadset Society off the road, but the band isn’t dead. In fact, Mike said the band has most of a new album recorded, but no plans to release it in the near future.

Mike, Dane, Reid, Brandon, I hope you’ll change your minds and finish up that album. You’ve got a lot of fans–myself included–who would love to hear new Deadset Society material, most of which, at least on the first album, is written Reid Henry.

In the meantime, Dane and Brendan had some music they had written, so, together with Mike, they formed the three-piece project Tense Machine. With a full album in the works and slated for a release late this year, Tense Machine is seeding the terrain now with a three-song EP.

Here’s brand new Toronto Hard Rock band Tense Machine, the evolution of My Darkest Days into something potentially even greater. This is “I Won’t Throw It Away” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

“I Won’t Throw It Away” by Tense Machine. Tense Machine is Dane Hartsell on vocals and guitar, Brendan McMillan on bass and vocals, and Mike Langford on drums and programming. They’re three-fourths of Deadset Society exploring different songwriting as Tense Machine.

Right now, let’s get you another Cover Song of the Week clue.

The Cover Song of the Week is the second version of the song done by the same Metal band.

Originally covered on their 2018 album, in 2019 the artist released another version of this song, this time with contributions from Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Brian May, and Brantley Gilbert. Proceeds from this version are going to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which assists veterans and first responders. The original artist said of the cover, quote, “This is a powerful collaboration of rock, country and blues artists and a true testament to the commonalities these musical styles share.”

It’s a Cruel, Crue Summer on Hard, Heavy & Hair, a double-shot of Motley Crue–one hit, one deep cut or rarity. You just heard “What’s It Gonna Take,” a deep cut from the autobiographical AOR record Saints of Los Angeles following one of the Crue’s earliest hits, 1981’s “Too Fast for Love.”

Motley Crue’s official biography–the book, not the film–releases as an audio book this week. _The Dirt: Confessions Of The World’s Most Notorious Rock Band_ is available now as an unabridged audio book from HarperAudio and Dey Street Books. It features multiple narrators, though not the Crue themselves. There’s a link to The Dirt audiobook in the show notes.

In related Crue news, Vince and the entire band are pissed about an UNauthorized, and apparently misleading, documentary on the Reelz channel. The latest episode of the documentary series Breaking the Band focuses on Motley Crue, allegedly from the memories of former band manager Doug Thaler.

According to both Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx, the content of the show is inaccurate and actionable. In a tweet sent just minutes ago as I record this show, Nikki Said said, quote, “Breaking the band was not authorized by Mötley Crüe. “Ghost” from Badflower. I’m conflicted about playing that song. It’s a good cut–no pun intended–but it’s still a song about suicide. Does it belong on the air? Does it belong on MY air? Should I refuse to play it?

I digress. Badflower’s “Ghost” is a controversial song. No stranger to controversy is Guns N Roses, and now, from the horse’s mouth, we have the story behind one of their most criticized songs.

Yahoo! Music editor-in-chief Lyndsey Parker recently interviewed Guns N Roses bassist Duff McKagan about his new Shooter Jennings-produced solo album, Tenderness, and a controversial Guns N Roses classic. Here’s what Duff had to say:

“Black River,” a new track from The Tea Party, a band that owns the TeaParty.com domain name despite offers of more than a million dollars for it because of its obvious value to the otherwise unrelated Tea Party political movement.

This week Megadeth frontman and former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine announced that he has throat cancer. He said, quote, “It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on – but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun.” End quote.

Although Megadeth has consequently had to cancel most of its upcoming 2019 shows, Dave won’t stop working. He said, quote “Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form… Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to Dystopia – which I can’t wait for everyone to hear.” End quote.

His daughter, Electra Mustaine, wrote a touching tweet to her dad following the announcement. She said, quote, “I would do and give anything for this man. Dad… I love you so so much. You‘ve taught me what love should look like, taught me reliability, perseverance, commitment….and mostly, strength. On days when you can’t, I will give you mine.”

One last Cover Song of the Week clue and then one last brand new song before the Cover Song of the Week itself.

In an interview with Songfacts the original recording artist and writer said the song lyrics were inspired by, quote, “two colors that were dominant on my shirt, and if you mix those two colors together, black consumes the blue.”

When asked about the meaning of the song, he declined to define it, giving it over to the listener instead. Quote “So many people have applied the song to a death in the family, an abusive relationship, a broken relationship, or whatever. There are so many different ways. That’s what’s beautiful about music and lyrics is trying to write a song that the listener can apply to their own experience in whatever way seems fit. And that’s one of those songs.”

How did you do figuring out the Cover Song of the Week?

Originally recorded by Blues Rock artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd in 1997, “Blue On Black” landed Shepherd on the Hot 100 chart.

Shy singer Ivan Moody wanted to cover the song with his band Five Finger Death Punch, which they did on last year’s And Justice for None LP. This year, 5FDP re-recorded the song with help from the original recording artist, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Queen’s Brian May, and Country singer, songwriter, and producer Brantley Gilbert. That version of the song is the number 1 rock song on the Billboard charts this week, and all proceeds from playing the song go to the Veterans’- and First-Responders’-assistance fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation.

With help from the original recording artist reprising his vocals, this is “Blue on Black” by Five Finger Death Punch. The original Kenny Wayne Shepherd version follows it right after.
