Before we get into anything else, I want to give you a bonus Cover Song of the Week clue ahead of any formal clues.

You see, that song you just heard was one of the pivotal songs that inspired a six-year-old Jewish kid from Brooklyn to pick up guitar. He wanted to play like Gene Simmons–another New York Jew–but his hands were too small for bass, so he started with guitar. That six-year-old would become a 51-year-old who has played lead guitar for Guns N’ Roses, Asia, and Sons of Apollo.

That’s a bonus Cover Song of the Week clue. More clues later.

It’s unusual that I give you a clue right at the top of the show, but this, my friends, this is an unusual Hard, Heavy & Hair Show.

Let me tell you just a LITTLE about it.

First, I’ve got for you the first brand new AC/DC single since the reunion of Brian Johnson and Phil Rudd with the band.

Then, I have a truly special, heartfelt tribute to Eddie Van Halen, whom we lost last week to cancer. #FuckCancer. Believe me, you don’t want to miss this tribute. And, if you have the option, you should listen to it with headphones on to hear every note and nuance.

Woo! AC/DC is back, baby! Holy hell, that’s the old school AC/DC sound on brand new single “Shot in the Dark.” Brian Johnson back on vocals. Phil Rudd back on skins. And Stevie Young, nephew of Malcolm Young, on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. That is the first song off the new album Power Up, which is said to be a tribute to Malcolm Young much like Back in Black was a tribute to Bon Scott.

Before new AC/DC was “Evangeline” by the band After Hours. We have Hard Rock, Hard Country, and now, apparently, Hard Swing.

Coming up next is my interview with Black Wolf Mountain the exclusive premiere of their new song, but first, let me get you your first OFFICIAL Cover Song of the Week clue. This one is tough.

Let’s talk about the Cover Song of the Week artists. They aren’t a band, just a one-time collaboration to record the cover. It’s a duo. She’s the diamond of Diemonds, and he’s named after a bacterial infection that afflicts birds, rabbits, and rodents.

I told you the first clue was the toughest. More and easier clues coming up.

Ready for your second Cover Song of the Week clue?

The Cover Song of the Week original is one of those famous mondegreens, one of those songs containing lyrics often misheard and given new meaning. Think “Purple Haze” and a lot of people hearing “‘scuse me while I kiss THIS GUY” instead of what Jimi actually sang, which was “‘scuse me while I kiss THE SKY.” That’s a mondegreen.

In this case, the Cover Song of the Week contains a line many people mishear as “Show me what’s funky, show me what’s right.”

What song is that? Ponder that while Def Leppard serenades us from way back in in 1981. From High ‘n’ Dry, this is “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.”

Speaking of bringing on the heartbreak. Last week, as you hear this show, three days ago, as I record it, the world lost Eddie Van Halen. Eddie’s influence on guitarists and the entirety of Rock N’ Roll is immeasurable. I’d like to take a portion of this show to pay tribute to a musician and man whom the world will sorely miss. I’m going to play some of the best of Eddie’s work, including Van Halen songs, and an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo medley I put together from some very well known, and some not so well known EVH recordings. In between, I’ll tell you a few things about the man.. about the legend, you may not know.

Let’s start with one of the intros many next-generation guitar gods try to emulate. It’s one of those funky two-handed tapping examples that really shows off Eddie’s mastery of his instrument. From Fair Warning, this is “Mean Street.”

Edward Lodewijk Van Halen–yes, Van Halen is his and Alex’s real last names–couldn’t read music. Yeah, you heard me right. Eddie Van Halen couldn’t read music. He actually counted that as an advantage… Damn. It’s hard sitting here and mentally editing myself. I know all these facts, but I know them in the PRESENT TENSE. I THINK “He actually COUNTS, present tense, that as an advantage,” but then, just before I speak, I have to remind myself that he’s gone.

I didn’t know Eddie personally. I never had that privilege like I have with so many other legends, but you can’t love Rock N’ Roll, Hard Rock, or anything that came after Van Halen without also loving the influence, even if you did’t get to know the man, of Eddie Van Halen.

Anyway… Eddie… couldn’t… read sheet music. Instead, he memorized his piano teacher’s finger movements, and later just played by ear. Think about all those Van Halen songs… Think about the music he contributed to other people’s songs. He did all that by ear. He learned to play by ear.

Amazing.

From Diver Down, this is “Little Guitars,” including the 42-second, Flamenco-inspired intro Eddie plays on a nylon string acoustic guitar.

Did you know Eddie Van Halen held three patents? He was a brilliant artist and a talented inventor. He held patents for a unique guitar pegged design, one for an adjustable string tension control, and, the one everyone has seen him use on stage in and in performance videos, a device the attaches to the back of a guitar and props up on his body… propped on his body… past tense, damn. To get the guitar to lie flat, parallel-to-the-floor, for his two-handed finger-tapping technique.

Eddie was always experimenting, as in this next song. One day a worker left his electric drill in the studio. Eddie picked up, realized it was in the exact same key as the song Van Halen–now with Sammy Hagar fronting–was working on, and that his guitar pickups faithfully reproduced the sound. The rest is history, like this song: “Poundcake.”

Welcome back. Before we continue with my tribute to the legend we lost recently, Eddie Van Halen, let me give you your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue.

The Cover Song of the Week original is a Rock song from the King of Pop and features a guitar solo from one of the greatest Rock guitarists who ever lived. That guitarist did the solo–two takes–free of charge, as a favor to producer Quincy Jones. At the time, the guitarist thought no one would ever know even contributed the solo to the track, and that the track wouldn’t really be a big deal… Until that particular song went 4 times Platinum in the US alone, with similar success in the rest of the world.

Can you guess the song? Well, it doesn’t matter who’s wrong or who’s right. No one wants to be defeated. And later in the show, I’ll reveal whether YOU were wrong or right in the Cover Song of the Week segment.

Right now, “Jamie’s Cryin’.” Listen for Eddie’s two-note reply to David Lee Roth’s vocals in the chorus.

So what 4x Platinum Rock song from the King of Pop did one of the greatest Rock guitarists to ever live contribute the guitar solo to–free of charge, as a favor to friend Quincy Jones? That song would be the timeless “Beat It” from Michael Jackson’s breakout album Thriller. The guitar solo was done by none other than Eddie Van Halen, who recorded it while the rest of the VH band was out of town. As I said, he did the solo free, and he did it uncredited. If you’ve got an old copy of Thriller lying around, look at the credits: Eddie isn’t mentioned. Eddie didn’t think the song would be big, and figured no one would even know he’d ever done the solo. Boy, was he wrong!

“Beat It” is HUGE, and Eddie’s guitar solo is one of the major reasons why.

In one of the clues I noted that “Beat It” contains a mondegreen, a commonly misheard lyric. Many of you probably thought the line “Show me what’s funky, show me what’s right” IS the actual lyric. If so, then I’m sorry to disappoint, but the actual line Michael Jackson wrote and sings is “Show me how funky and strong is your fight”. Now you have something to win a bar bet with. Win yourself a beer for me.

Covering “Beat It” is a duo who got together just for the collaboration. On vocals is the diamond of Diemonds, Priya Panda. On guitar, including a scorching approximation of Eddie Van Halen’s solo, is Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal from Sons of Apollo, Asia, and Guns N’ Roses. Together they’re Metalizing the 80s Pop-Rock classic “Beat It”. Crank it up! The Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen original follows Priya’s and Bumblefoot’s heavy cover.
